About Destroyer of Illusion: The Secret World of a Tibetan Lama

Narrated by Richard Gere and directed by Richard Kohn, Destroyer of Illusion (1991) tells the story of the Mani Rimdu festival, an important, sacred Tibetan Buddhist ritual. The film features Trulshik Rinpoche (1923-2011), one of the main teachers of His Holiness the Fourteenth Dalai Lama and one of the preeminent Nyingma masters of the last century. Hailed by the Boston Globe as a “jewel of a documentary,” the film was shot on location in the Solu-Khumbu Everest region of Nepal. Described by the San Francisco Chronicle as “pulsating with color, movement, music and . . . faith,” this documentary is illuminating in its portrayal of Tibetan Buddhist practice. Running time: 56 minutes.

All with an interest in Tibetan culture and Buddhism are welcome to attend.

The film will be followed by a lively seminar-style discussion.

The Blue Mountain Dharma Film Series (BMD Film Series) is a monthly educational seminar on

Tibetan Buddhism. Meeting on a monthly basis to view and discuss films illustrating Tibetan

Buddhist practice, the seminar features documentaries and biographical films focusing on the

lives of notable Tibetan lineage
