About
Written, edited, and directed by Christina Lundberg, For the Benefit of All Beings (2013) is a documentary telling the life story of His Eminence Garchen Triptrul Rinpoche, a recognized incarnation of Aryadeva and one of the foremost Tibetan lamas living today. Born in 1936, Garchen Rinpoche fought during the 1959 Tibetan uprising in order to protect His Holiness the Dalai Lama. He was captured and imprisoned for 20 years, enduring extreme hardship in a Chinese prison where he met his root guru, the great Nyingma master Khenpo Munsel. This illuminating documentary traces Rinpoche’s remarkable story, sharing details of his confinement and his practice as it developed under Munsel’s spiritual guidance. The film shows how Garchen Rinpoche fearlessly returned to Tibet 20 years later to restore Buddhist practice and build schools among communities that had become impoverished and illiterate since his imprisonment—and how he established centers throughout the world to foster Buddhist study and practice. Directed by an accomplished filmmaker (Mystic Tibet, Discovering Buddhism, Maitreya Project), this documentary offers an extraordinarily detailed and moving account of this Buddhist lineage master. Running time: 100 minutes.
“…Perhaps the most inspiring Buddhist documentary I have ever seen.”
