About Brilliant Moon
Written and directed by Neten Chokling, Brilliant Moon (2010) is a documentary telling the life story of Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche (1910–1991), who is remembered as one of Tibet’s greatest and most revered Vajrayana masters. During his life, Rinpoche taught many high lamas, including His Holiness the Fourteenth Dalai Lama, who regarded Rinpoche as his principal teacher in Dzogchen. Yet Rinpoche was not initially allowed to pursue his calling. Born in Kham to a noble family directly descended from King Trisong Detsen, Rinpoche’s father was at first very reluctant to allow his son to take monastic vows. The documentary traces Rinpoche’s remarkable story, from how he came to wear his robes and then marry, to how he escaped from Tibet to take refuge in Bhutan—and eventually begin giving teachings in the West. Narrated by Richard Gere and Lou Reed, the film includes rare archival footage as well as interviews. Stunning and profound, this film offers a glimpse into the life of a teacher, scholar, and poet who helped to transform the lives of multitudes. Running time: 58 minutes.
